NCAA Championship 2008

Never in NCAA history has all four number-one seeded teams made it to the final four. This year, history changed, and Kansas, Memphis, University of North Carolina, and UCLA, all made it to the final four. Memphis, having only lost one game all season blew a favorite in UCLA away: 78-63. Kansas defeated UNC, a legend when it comes to college basketball, 84-66. So it was down to the best of the best, Kansas vs. Memphis in a race for the championship.
Nearly 5 minutes in the game, and Memphis already had a 6 point lead, winning 9-3. Kansas came back strong tying the game in only 2 minutes. The lead would shift in margins of mere points throughout the first half, with Kansas leading 33-28.

The locker room chat by John Calipari, the coach of the Memphis Tigers must have been a fierce one as Memphis started the half looking better than ever before. Memphis had possesion for much of the first 10 minutes of the second half, and with 10 minutes remaining, the score was a dead heat with Memphis trailing 44-45. The lead then shifted, and Memphis had a 60-51 lead with just over 2 minutes to play.
Kansas needed a comeback, and they needed it fast. A mere minute passed, and Kansas had gone outscored Memphis 9-2. It was 60-62, with Memphis leading. With 16 seconds left, a foul by Darrell Arthur could have lost the game for Kansas, but Chris Douglas-Roberts choked, and missed both shots. Kansas committed another intentional foul 6 seconds later, and Derrick Rose made 1 of 2.
The score was 63-60, with a Memphis lead. The most important 9 seconds in most of the young players lives was about to unfold. They dribble down the court, passing the ball like hot potato. It finally reached Mario Chalmers. He
shoots from the arch; the crowd freezes.
With just over
2 seconds left in the game, and having only made two three-pointers up to this point, Kansas needed a miracle. The ball seemed to stay in the air forever, as it usually does in such an important game, and just like in the movies, the ball went straight in. We are going to overtime.
A whole game, a whole 64 team tournament, was about to be decided by 5 minutes. Kansas came off strong, scoring 6 unanswered points in 2 1/2 minutes. This lead would prove unsurmountable for Memphis, as they lost the Championship 75-68.
After such a close defeat, many say "Oh, Memphis just didn't want it as bad as Kansas". This is simply not true. A team needs skill, not just the desire to win. Memphis wanted to win just as badly as Kansas, but Kansas just had a more stacked team, and made the shots when it counted
